Our Classes... RELIGION: The Holy Spirit Blesses the Church Our second unit focuses on how the Holy Spirit blesses the Church now and throughout history. Lessons will center on the Third Article of the Apostle's Creed and on how God used Martin Luther to bring about Reformation in the Church. There is no memory work this week. READING: Benchmarking This week, teachers continue to assess students' current reading levels so that we can understand their needs and enable them to keep growing in their reading skills. WRITING: Personal Narrative Students are working on developing a personal narrative (true autobiographical story) into a more complete story. As they work on this, they are focusing on organizing their writing in chronological sequence and on considering the traits of good writing. SPELLING: No spelling list this week SOCIAL STUDIES: Our Environment Chapter 1 asks the question, "How do we interact with our planet?" In this chapter, students get a basic overview of the geography of the United States; learn about how different environments affect people, plants, and animals; consider how people use natural resources; and ponder the importance of environmental conservation.

READING: Benchmarking This week, teachers are assessing students' current reading levels so that we can understand their needs and enable them to keep growing in their reading skills. WRITING: Personal Narrative Students will be writing a couple of personal narratives in their notebooks this week and will choose one to develop into a more developed story. As they work on this, they will be focusing on organizing their writing in chronological sequence and on considering the traits of good writing. SPELLING: List 4A - Long A (ai, ay) and Long E (ea, ee) List 4a mostly looks at words with the long a sound spelled ai or ay and at words with the long e sound spelled ea or ee. Please check the Vocabulary A-Z website for our current spelling list and corresponding activities. Our 4A spelling test will be on Thursday. READING: Asking Questions As we read, it is important to occasionally stop and ask questions. This enables us as readers to identify important information and watch for answers. Sometimes, it might even inspire us to find out more when we are done reading our current book. WRITING: Writing Traits There are certain traits of writing that writers consider when seeking to make their writing strong. This week, we're being introduced to those traits: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. SPELLING: List 3B - Digraphs ch, sh, th, wh List 3B mostly looks at words that contain the digraphs ch, sh, th, and wh. These consonant combinations make sounds that are distinct from the consonants when they are separate. Please check the Vocabulary A-Z website for our current spelling list and corresponding activities. Our 3B spelling test will be on Thursday. READING: Literacy Block Now that most classes are back in school, we are continuing our literacy block. Literacy block takes place on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Please watch for the small group assignment sheet that goes home on these days. Check your child's small group assignment, and sign the form when the work is done. Thanks! WRITING: Writing Process We are exploring the steps of the writing process that promote effective writing. Students review the writing process as they write a story inspired by Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, a fun book I am reading the class. In each chapter, parents call Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle about a problem they are having with their children, and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle gives them a wonderful and hilarious cure.
