Our Classes... RELIGION: God and His Word Our first unit introduces God and His Word, starting with the identity and attributes of God and an explanation of the Bible and how it has come to us. We learn that God wants us to read, understand, and apply His Word. Check out the 'Memory Work' tab on our website to see the words, hear a song, and print the memory work/spelling sheet. Our test on the Lord's Prayer will be on Friday. MATH: Mental Math and Estimation Chapter 2 focuses on using number bonds and estimation strategies in mental calculation to find and check sums and differences. Lessons this week include...
READING: Literacy Block Due to the quarantined classes, we will not be having literacy block this week. We will instead be involved in a variety ofother literacy activities. WRITING: Writing Process We are exploring the steps of the writing process that promote effective writing. Students review the writing process as they write a story inspired by Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, a fun book I am reading the class. In each chapter, parents call Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle about a problem they are having with their children, and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle gives them a wonderful and hilarious cure. This week, we will revise, edit, and begin the final draft. SPELLING: List 2B - Short vowels in first syllables List 2B mostly looks at words that contain short vowels in their first syllables. Please check the Vocabulary A-Z website for our current spelling list and corresponding activities. Our 2B spelling test will be on Thursday. SOCIAL STUDIES: Our Environment Chapter 1 asks the question, "How do we interact with our planet?" In this chapter, students get a basic overview of the geography of the United States; learn about how different environments affect people, plants, and animals; consider how people use natural resources; and ponder the importance of environmental conservation. SCIENCE: Types of Living Things In this chapter, the big idea is, "Cells are the building blocks of all the many types of living things." We will be looking at different types of living things, at parts of living things (like cells), and at how living things grow and change.

READING: Literacy Block This week, we start our literacy block (though we may change this name). This is a shared time for students in grades 1-4 to be able to discuss and practice literacy skills at their level and that are focused on their needs. Students may be in any of the four classrooms during this time and may participate in small group reading activities based on boosting their overall reading level or based on improving specific skills. When not involved in these small groups, students will be practicing other literacy skills such as spelling and phonics. As we begin this program, it is likely that changes will be made as we see just what works best as we work to target the needs of our students.
